The Amazing Spiderman Trailer Swings Online

Rebooting the Spider-Man film series, Marc Webb’s (500 Days of Summer) upcoming superhero movie places Andrew Garfield (Never Let Me Go) in the role of the titular superhero (once occupied by Seabiscuit’s Tobey Macguire) Spider-Man and his geeky everyday persona Peter Parker, and has just had its first trailer released online (now available to view below).

Co-starring Emma Stone (Zombieland) as love interest Gwen Stacey, Denis Leary (Rescue Me) as her father George, and Sally Field (Mrs. Doubtfire) as Pete’s Aunt May, and Martin Sheen (The Way) as his Uncle Ben (in an undeniably great piece of casting), the new movie has been filmed on a much smaller budget than Sam Raimi’s trilogy, and will this time see Pete facing off against The Lizard (other wise known as Dr. Curt Connors, and played by Mr. Nice’s Rhys Ifans).

The trailer suggests a totally different different tone to Raimi’s trilogy, and seems to be much darker and moodier than the previous Spidey iterations, though it clearly disappoints in a number of aspects; fanboys will be disappointed there aren’t any shots of The Lizard yet, and everyone else will likely cringe at the closing first-person sequence of Spidey jumping over a number of skyscrapers, not only because it seems like an ill-fitting tonal shift, but because the CG effects are clearly awful.

Still, there’s plenty of time left for the effects to be sorted out, as The Amazing Spider-Man isn’t due to be released until July 3rd 2012 (in both the US and UK); but the question still remains, do we need a new Spider-Man this soon after the last film series?
