The Avengers movie was always going to be huge, and we already knew that it’s been storming the international Box Office for over a week, but as Marvel’s latest has now opened in the US, it’s clear the superhero crossover movie has exceeded expectations in almost every way possible.
Scoring an impressive $80.5m on its first day in the US (making it the second biggest opening ever; behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2), The Avengers then blew the naysayers predictions out of the water, and went on to earn $200.3m. Just in the US. In one weekend.
And with a tally just north of $200m that means The Avengers earns the highest grossing opening weekend of all time (taking the coveted crown away from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2), and has now raked in a total gross which is nearing the $650m mark; suggesting there should be no problem for the Joss Whedon directed superhero classic to smash through the $1billion barrier before it finishes its run (especially seen as how it’s still to open in Japan, and no other studio has even dared challenge The Avengers in the US – pitting nothing noteworthy against it this past weekend, and holding off most major releases until at least the end of the month; save for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows on May 11th, and Men in Black III on May 25th).
