Despite filming finishing back in 2009, distribution has only recently been secured for The Bang Bang Club; a movie chronicling the true story of four young combat photographers, who placed themselves in harms way to capture the most brutal scenes of violence during Apartheid in South Africa; which has just has first trailer released online (now available to view below).
As all four of the photographers begin to struggle with their consciences, and become deeply affected by the events around them (as they are essentially getting paid to not only watch, but photograph people being murdered),The Bang Bang Club shows the efforts that the men went to in order to capture some truly harrowing images of the violence, and how their editor tried to not only keep them working and in line, but did everything she could to get the brutal images published (whilst also falling for one of the guys).
Written and directed by Steven Silver (Almost Audrey), The Bang Bang Club has been adapted from the book of the same name, and stars Ryan Phllippe (Cruel Intentions), Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Frank Rautenbach (Faith Like Potatoes), and Neels Van Jaarsveld (Goodbye Bafana) as the four photographers, who are accompanied on their journey by Malin Akerman (The Proposal); as the editor Robin Comley.
The Bang Bang Club is due to be released in the U.S. on April 22nd, but hasn’t secured a release date in the U.K. just yet; possibly because the subject matter cuts just a little too close to home for the Brits, or possibly just because it’s received some pretty mixed reviews from festivals attendees, and could easily be an overly preachy, moralistic drama.
