After topping the UK Box Office within hours of beginning its initial theatrical previews, The Inbetweeners Movie had cinema owners scrambling to open more screens to show the film; which has now gone on to become a record-breaking movie, and earn an even bigger accolade, by earning the biggest opening week ever for a live action comedy.
And while that sounds fairly impressive; as it’s beat down classic British comedies such as The Full Monty with little-to-no trouble at all; it’s even more impressive when you consider that that includes comedies from both the US and UK; putting The Inbetweeners ahead of movies such as Bridesmaids (which for a point held the 2011 crown, with nearly £6million) and Meet the Fockers (which earned just shy of £10.9million).
Earlier this year The Hangover Part II broke the same record, and clocked in with an opening week of over £17million (beating previous record holder Hancock; which took a mere £13million), yet The Inbetweeners Movie; the first Film4 production to be adapted from a TV show; grossed a lofty $20million+ in its first week alone, had earned £27,715,177 by August 30th (10 days after it was released on August 19th), and is still going strong in cinemas nationwide now.
