Opening last week, The Lion King 3D (the theatrical re-release of one of Disney’s best loved classics) shot to the top of the US Box Office; taking an impressive $30 million; pushing Drive down to third place, and racking up a number of other special achievements.
The huge opening makes The Lion King the 3rd highest grossing animated movie of all time, gave Disney its 2nd best September opening ever, and is the 1st re-release to jump in at the top of the Box Office for 14 years; suggesting that Simba, Mufasa, Nala, Scar, Timon and Pumbaa, still have legs to compete with the more modern CGI kids flicks, and should stand a good chance of performing well when The Lion King 3D opens in the UK next month.
Due to open on October 7th (17 years to the day since the original movie made its theatrical debut), The Lion King will be playing in cinemas across the UK for a total of four weeks, ahead of its upcoming Blu-ray release; a release which marks the first time The Lion King will have been released on any home format since 2004.
The Lion King will then enter the homes of its many adoring fans when the long awaited Diamond edition (due to be released on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and DVD); which is reported to contain impressive picture and sound enhancements upon previous editions, a host of interactive features, and some all new special features (including brand new animated bloopers); is released on the same day as the upcoming release of The Lion King trilogy, on November 7th.
