Lauded over by critics everywhere, and often cited as one of the greatest TV shows ever made, HBO’s gripping drama (where each season focussed on a different aspect of inner-city life in Boston; following the police, criminals, schools, politicians, and journalism in that order) could soon be returning to the network, with a brand new high-definition remaster.
Filmed in Super 35 (with Panavision cameras) The Wire originally had its sides cut off in order to fit the standard definition 4:3 aspect ratio it was first broadcast in, and although a widescreen version does exist (having been available for streaming on Amazon Prime a while ago) it’s still unclear exactly what aspect ratio The Wire would be awarded should it make a comeback (and any dates in the promotional video below are to be ignored, as HBO have confirmed they’re not yet ready to air The Wire just yet).
There’s no air date as yet, and speculation remains as to whether or not HBO are planning the remaster for another TV airing (the original rumours stated it’d be for a Wire marathon sometime down the road), or a potential Blu-ray boxset down the line (not unlike The Sopranos boxset being released next week), but while HBO is definitely considering remastering The Wire, the prospect of a new high definition version of David Simon’s gritty drama is certainly enough to get fans suitably excited.
