Despite the fact every single fan, and everyone in the movie-going world, agreed Toy Story 3 provided a brilliant, emotional, and above all fitting end to the Toy Story saga, Disney announced last night that Pixar would indeed be producing a fourth Toy Story movie.
Announced via a shareholders conference call (for financial analysts to discuss the companies earnings), there’s very little known about the planned film thus far, though former Toy Story director and Pixar boss John Lasseter has said “we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew [Stanton], Pete [Docter], Lee [Unkrich] and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie – and I wanted to direct it myself.”
Lasseter will indeed return to direct Toy Story 4, and although the announcement has been met with a large degree of cynicism, a fourth outing for the toys has been rumoured ever since Toy Story 3 took over a billion dollars at the Box Office (and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Film), and remained in the public consciousness thanks to a series of well received shorts and specials, we now know Toy Story 4 is officially happening, will be directed by John Lasseter, and is due to be released on June 16th 2017; putting it in direct competition with two other popular animated franchises, How To Train Your Dragon 3, and Despicable Me 3.
