Despite all the criticism thrown at the Transformers franchise for its lack of plot, poor acting, and generally safe popcorn nature, there’s no denying that it’s become hugely successful, and as the third film in the franchise (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) was released last year to a much better reception than the second (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), and grossed over $1.12 billion worldwide, another sequel was inevitable, and has recently been officially confirmed.
Michael Bay will once again be returning as the director of the new movie; which will once again see a variety of giant alien robots proceeding to change into other things in order to hide their identities (cars, a lorry, a fighter jet, etc.) and generally having a bit of a barney, and smashing a lot of things up; though producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has said that they plan to “do a reboot” this time around.
Shia LaBeouf (who’s headlined the past three movies) has already suggested that he’s had his fill of the franchise, and a reboot would provide the perfect platform for replacing him (to the delight of many critics and fans; who believe he was a weight around the neck of the more charismatic robots), but it’s not known as yet exactly what form the new Transformers movie will take; as Lorenzo’s stated while “there’s still continuity” it will “be a whole new story” and they’ve still “got to get a story first”; though it’s definitely planned as “one film to kick off a new run, not the back-to-back experience” Hasbro recently hinted at, and is due to be released in 2014.
