Last month, reports revealed that the sequel to Pacific Rim had been delayed indefinitely. Pacific Rim 2 was set for release in August 2017, but was pulled from Universal Pictures’ release schedule. But now fans of the monster movie showdown can rejoice as Universal confirms a sequel is still on the way.
According to Coming Soon, Pacific Rim 2 “will be re-dated at a later time…the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim‘ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”
There has been speculation recently about a King Kong and Godzilla crossover film, leading to rumours that the Pacific Rim sequel would be put into production purgatory, but news today seems to refute that possibility.
Del Toro has always been committed to helming a sequel to Pacific Rim (which made $411 million at the box office), and told Entertainment Weekley earlier this month: “We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”
Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, his newest horror outing, premiered at the Fantastic Fest over the weekend, and will be released theatrically on October 16.
