While the rumours of the one-handed hick Merle Dixon (played to perfection by Michael Rooker, in his fairly brief first season appearance) returning to play one of the most influential and eagerly awaited characters in AMC’s zombie-drama have remained persistent, they’ve now proven to be false, as British actor David Morrissey will play The Governor in The Walking Dead.
A legendary, and entirely ruthless, character in the comic series that spawned the multi-award-winning TV show, The Governor is the brutal and uncompromising ruler of a prison found by officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln, This Life) and his band of survivors in the Zombie-infested world of The Walking Dead, and, according to an official announcement by AMC, will be played by Blitz’s David Morrissey when he arrives in the show’s third season; which begins production shortly, and will premiere this fall.
