Looking more and more like a French Tony Soprano, Gérard Depardieu (Green Card, Mesrine) will soon be seen back on the big screen in Cannes’ most controversial film, and you can now see the official Welcome To New York trailer below, following a selection of images from the film.
Inspired by the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair, Welcome To New York sees Gérard Depardieu starring as Devereaux (Strauss-Kahn); head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) he controlled billions of dollars, and held the fate of some of the world’s largest economies in his hands, yet suffered a horrific downfall after being accused of sexual assault against a maid in the Sofitel New York Hotel in 2011.
After being snubbed by Cannes, facing censorship by the French media, and completely denied a theatrical release in France (with many observers crying “corruption”, and believing the French are simply trying to protect Strauss-Kahn, who himself has threatened to sue for slander, from any more bad press), the Abel Ferrara (King of New York) directed Welcome To New York will co-star Jacqueline Bisset (Bullitt), and is due to be released theatrically in the UK on August 8th, before being released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Video On Demand on September 29th.
