Werner Herzog to Play One Shot Villain Opposite Tom Cruise

While the widely publicized casting of Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible) as Jack Reacher (the 6”5, hulking, ex-army cop) for One Shot (the upcoming adaptation of Lee Child’s novel) has drawn its share of fan opposition (largely due to Cruise not fitting the physical bill of Reacher’s description in Child’s novels), another unusual and surprising casting move has just been announced; confirming that Bad Lieutenant director Werner Herzog will be stepping in front of the camera, to play the film’s villain.

Herzog himself will not be directing One Shot (that job falls to The Usual Suspects’ Christopher McQuarrie), but starring as an “ageless and shadowy figure” known as The Zec, in the film which follows Jack Reacher as he investigates the mysterious case of a sniper who’s accused of killing five people, and begins to discover there’s much more to the case than initially meets the eye.

Co-starring Rosamund Pike (Surrogates) and Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), One Shot is due to begin filming in Pittsburgh later this month, ahead of a February 8th 2013 release in the US (no UK release date has been announced as yet, though One Shot is likely to appear in British cinemas shortly after its US debut).
