Film fans attending CinemaCon in Las Vegas this Wednesday were treated to the first official footage from the upcoming Avatar sequel, now titled Avatar: The Way of Water.
Producer Jon Landau introduced the teaser trailer, which is set to be released next week ahead and play exclusively ahead of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, saying “we need to make sure [audiences] have an experience they can’t get anywhere else, and that needs to be exclusively in theatres.”
With those attending the Disney presentation in Caesars Palace were asked to put on their 3D glasses before the trailer, it seems as though 3D remains very much a part of said experience; since Avatar ushered in the 3D movie revolution when it was released in 2009, and saw huge leaps in fields such as performance-capture, and virtual production.
Returning director James Cameron explained how they “set out to push the limits of what cinema can do”; something clear in the sheer number of versions which will be rolling out to theatres; including 2D, 3D, 4K, IMAX, high resolution, high frame rates, and versions set to make the most of a number of different cinema sound systems.
Which allowed the Avatar 2 teaser trailer to make quite the splash when it played in the Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision configured Colosseum at Caesars, and showed off Jake Sully and Neytiri (played by a returning Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña respectively) and along with a host of wildlife from both above and below the seas of Pandora.
As it’s been a full 13 years since Avatar first hit cinemas, the original Avatar will be returning to cinemas on 23 September (with restored picture and sound), ahead of the first of its four sequels Avatar: The Way of Water being released on 16 December.
