FX Plan Sons of Anarchy Spin-off

Since the show ended last year, fans have been wondering if they would get to see anymore from the outlaw motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy, and it appears they will; but not how many expected.

Even as recently as Comic-Con (back in July), series creator Kurt Sutter had been talking up the possibility of a SoA spin-off series, and creating a prequel series to explore the creation of the club, and follow what happen to Jax’s father. However, Entertainment Weekly now believes that’s not the case; as while FX are planning to produce a new show within the same universe, it will not be a prequel; the network instead plan to create a Sons of Anarchy spin-off focussing on the Mayans (another fictional motorcycle gang within the show).

While an unexpected choice (particularly as the Mayans began the show as adversaries to SAMCRO – before later becoming business partners with them), moving focus onto the Mayans would eliminate a number of headaches created by producing a prequel (having to adhere to strict continuity issues, period settings, possible returning stars and age difference etc.) while still allowing some of the Sons‘ cast to appear and maintain interest.

While there’s no title for the series as yet, and no official confirmation from either FX or Fox, it’d be highly likely to assume some sort of SoA spin-off is in the pipeline (particularly as Sons of Anarchy ranks as FX’s most popular show ever). Sutter however will likely take more of a backseat with the new show, as he’s not only dipping his toe into film scripting (having written the screenplay for the superb boxing drama Southpaw – starring Jake Gyllenhaal), but serving as showrunner on his latest series – medieval drama The Bastard Executioner, which was filmed in Wales, is set to premiere on US network FX on September 15th (no UK date has been announced as yet), and will star Katey Sagal, Stephen Moyer, and Lee Jones.
