Guardians of the Galaxy is the Biggest Film of 2014

Guardians of the Galaxy posterClearly adored by practically everyone who’s seen it, the ambitious, fun, and highly endearing Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy has not only risen to once again reclaim the top spot at the US Box Office, but earned more than any other film this year; meaning, officially, Guardians of the Galaxy is the highest grossing film of 2014 so far.

Providing a much needed boost to a summer Box Office which is still due to finish a worrying 15% short of last year’s takings, the enduring popularity of Guardians has now seen it become the 4th film of the year to top the US Box Office for three weekends (following Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ride Along, and The Lego Movie; which also starred Chris Pratt, and held the number one sport for four weekends during its theatrical run), and looks set to be the first film of the year to pass the $300 million mark in the US, having so far taken $277 million (far surpassing even Marvel’s own Captain America: The Winter Soldier; which grossed $255 million); a pleasing note, given the fact no other movie has come close this year, and the last time no single film managed to gross $300 million in a year was way back in the year 2000.

Friday’s takings also saw Guardians matching that of the newly released Pierce Brosnan action movie The November Man, despite that film performing well above expectations, and the found-footage horror film As Above So Below also performing well, whilst the re-release of Ghostbusters (celebrating the 30th anniversary of the beloved sci-fi/comedy) claimed a respectable $1 million on Friday alone.

You can read our Guardians of the Galaxy review here, catch Ghostbusters in UK cinemas this October, and while The November Man is currently lacking an official UK release date, given the premise, franchise potential, star, and US Box Office results, we’d expect it to score distribution here very soon (in the meantime, The November Man trailer can be found here).
