Philippa Boyens, best known for her work on both The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, has just been hired to write a Young Merlin film for Disney.
The move makes sense as Boyens is clearly versed in writing fantasy figures for the big screen (having won an Oscar in the process), and should have no trouble adapting T.A. Barron’s young adult series Merlin: The Lost Years for the cinema.
Writers Patrick Massett and john Zinman have moved on from the project, leaving Boyens the sole responsibility of adapting the novels; a series of 12 books [so far] which take several cues from the Harry Potter series, and feature the young wizard embarking on a number of quests with a female companion, and a jester, battling a spirit world warlord and learning to be the best wizard he can be before he’ll become the all-powerful sorcerer who eventually aids King Arthur; hoping it will be the beginning of a similarly successful franchise.
