Monsters Director to Film Godzilla

Gareth Edwards first film; Monsters; was released last year to such great critical acclaim (landing him no end of praise, and three British Independent Film awards; for Best Director, Best Achievement in Production, and Best Technical Achievement), it’s no wonder that Hollywood have been knocking on his door, and have now hired him to helm the next Godzilla project.

After famously making such a successful film as Monsters on such an extremely low budget, Edwards started to look very appealing to some of the larger studios (particularly as he stated he hoped Monsters would be his stepping stone towards larger projects), and so placing him in the director’s chair for another disaster/sci-fi film such as Godzilla must have seemed like a natural choice.

Edwards has been hired by Legendary Pictures (the production partners of Warner Bros. who together released both Inception, and The Dark Knight) to co-write and direct the new Godzilla movie, with an as yet un-hired writer; re-writing the original script that has been written by The Expendables David Callaham.

As the script hasn’t been finalized yet there’s no official start date been given for production, however Edwards will have to get a move on if he is to bring the giant terrorizing lizard back to the cinema for the studio’s planed summer 2012 release date.
