Ryan Gosling to Play The Lone Ranger?

After beginning as a successful radio show, before making the jump to TV in 1949, and becoming an instantly recognizable classic along the way, The Lone Ranger is due to receive a big screen adaptation by Disney, and now has a potential new leading man; none other than Ryan Gosling.

Gosling; who has been content to star mainly in indie projects, yet will have his first studio comedy (Crazy, Stupid, Love) released later this year; is currently in early talks to join the movie as the titular masked Texas ranger, although his busy schedule (which includes imminent work on the remake of Logan’s Run) may actually prevent him from joining the Ranger movie in the long run.

Should Gosling sign on, he’ll be joining Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp; who has long been attached to the film (starring as The Lone Ranger’s Native American sidekick Tonto); Pirates 1-3 director Gore Verbinski (who recently had a Western themed success with Depp in Rango), and Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, on the project Disney are hoping could one day rival their famed Pirates franchise.

Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road is currently working on the script), yet despite having a director, a second-lead, and now almost the titular star, in place, it will be sometime before audiences get to see The Lone Ranger; as it isn’t scheduled to be released until 2014 (slightly increasing the chances that Gosling may be able to join the nostalgic Western).
