Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender to Star as Vampires

We’re about to see the third series of True Blood released on Blu-ray and DVD, just caught a glimpse of a trailer for True Blood season four, have seen the trailer for the remake of Fright Night, have another Twilight sequel in the works, and another Underworld movie on the way, but just in case they don’t fill your vampire quota, we’ve now got news of two more vampire films which are soon to enter production.

The first is being helmed by Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire), titled Byzantium, and is an adaptation of the play, A Vampire Story, which will place Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia) in the leading roles of the two intriguing vampire women who, in the play, arrive in a small British town to the amazement of the locals, and soon tell the people who they really are.

The second, as yet untitled, movie has just been announced in Cannes, is being helmed by Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog), and will star Michael Fassbender (the Inglorious Batserds star, soon to be seen in X-Men: First Class), Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland); as the movies vampires; alongside John Hurt (Alien); who we assume will be playing a human.

Byzantium is due to begin filming in the UK this coming October (with a likely release to follow in 2012), and Jim Jarmusch’s picture; which is one he’s “been imagining for years”; will start shooting early next year in Germany, Morocco, and Detroit, but even though they may be interesting plots, proven directors, and solid actors attached, is this good news? is the announcement of even more vampire movies something to celebrate, or will they simply clog an already overfilled market?
