While a potential high-definition release of the brilliant, and now classic, TV cop show The Shield (following a rogue cop and his team, who were unafraid of breaking the law in order to bring justice to the streets of LA) has long been rumoured, there’s been both hope and resistance from fans; as losing the gritty nature of the show’s picture, and its traditional aspect ratio, could have drastically changed its look and feel. Now however, series creator Shawn Ryan has confirmed the restoration, remaster, and conversion to HD is definitely taking place.
However, in an attempt to put fans minds at ease, Shawn let it be known he was initially “dubious” himself, “but the test really won me over.” He also stated how being “filmed on 16mm and not digitally, [The] Shield is an ideal candidate” for such a conversion, and how any conversion will not be rushed; the “current plan is to have all complete by 15th Anniversary of pilot – March 2017.”
So, when the update is complete (and all presided over by Shawn himself), we can finally expect to see The Shield on Blu-ray, and potentially streaming at 4K (likely via Netflix 4K).
