The Reef: Trailer

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders; and as such its no surprise that it’s an ideal holiday destination for just about every student, travel enthusiast, and wildlife lover; but the upcoming Australian horror movie The Reef presents a very different side to the reef than the holiday brochures, and will undoubtedly put a couple of doubts in the minds of those planning a boat ride out into the ocean.

The Reef is based entirely on true events, and tells the story of a group of friends who take a boat out into the ocean to go snorkeling, and explore the depths and wonders of The Great Barrier Reef, only to have their boat capsize, and end up stranded in the middle of the treacherous Australian ocean.

Having survived the initial capsizing, the people are then left with a life-or-death decision; to sit and wait for help on the hull of the boat that is drifting out to sea, and could sink at any moment, or risk it all by attempting to swim to an island that they hope to be only ten miles away.

Needless to say the majority of the survivors decide to swim for it, and just like in any good horror move, have to struggle with not making it to land in the time they thought they would, struggling desperately to carry on and survive, and most importantly, being stalked by a Great White Shark.

Adrienne Pickering (Knowing), Zoe Naylor (McLeod’s Daughters), Gyton Grantley (Beneath Hill 60), Damian Walshe-Holwing (Insignia), and Kieran Darcy-Smith (The Cave), star in The Reef, which has been directed by Andrew Traucki (Black Water), comes from the same studio that has recently released the chilling horror film Frozen, and is unique in the fact that it was filmed with real, 14-foot-long, Great White Sharks; making the actors’ performances all the more terrifying, and realistic.

The Reef is premiering at 2.30am during Film4’s FrightFest All-Nighter, this Halloween (beginning on Saturday October 30th), before receiving a wider release on January 24th next year; but for people who want to get an early look at the film, the official promotional trailer can be seen below.
